Saturday’s Shows Cover the Musical Spectrum: Upstate Music Scene

Brett Barest

I often say in this space that “there is a little something for everyone” in the week ahead but, darn it, I am going say it again more specifically. There is a little something for everyone this Saturday alone. Allow me to pick my four favorite shows representing four completely different genres this coming Saturday evening in Greenville.

If you like rock & roll…

Go to Eighth State Brewing. There you will find Greenville’s own John the Revelator and his brand of boot stomping blues driven rock that I could listen to all day long. You will also find Spartanburg’s Salti Ray who brings a poppy, indie rock flavor to the evening. It is a delicious pairing of rock acts, especially when you taste the brews pouring from Eighth State’s taps. Between the music and the beer, there will be a ton of talent and creativity in the room Saturday evening and rock fans will not want to miss it.

If you like country…

Go to The Radio Room. Nashville’s Kendall Marvel and Erin Viancourt are touring the East Coast on the way to the Midwest and Greenville is really fortunate to have them make a stop here. Kendall Marvel moved to Nashville in 1998 and found immediate success as a songwriter, penning songs for everyone from George Straight and Chris Stapleton. Amidst all that success writing for others, it took until 2017 for him to record his own solo album Lowdown & Lonesome which opens with the line “Well, I ain’t ever been to Folsom but I’ve damn sure done my time” which is as classic country attitude as they come. Solid Gold Sounds followed just last year and both albums stand up as everything there is to love about the Nashville country music scene. For her part, Erin Viancourt brings a lovely voice and heartfelt songwriting for her half of a captivating evening of country music.

If you like hip-hop…

Go to Birds Fly South Ale Project. I have said it before and I will keep saying it – the Upstate music scene needs more hip-hop shows. Kudos to Birds Fly South for teaming with Gr8ful to make that happen with “Black Renaissance” Saturday evening. The show will feature six artists including Scotty K, Fernvndo, Lush Carter, Sole Eastside, Nate Jizzy, and Rikki Tan. Additionally, vendors will be on site for a festival vibe and the show will go until midnight, making for a satisfyingly full evening of music.

If you like jam bands…

Go to Gottrocks. This statement rings true almost every weekend as jam bands are Gottrocks specialty. This week sees the Jarvis Jenkins Band bring their Allman Brothers tribute down the mountain from Asheville. The arrangement features a couple members from The Dirty Dead giving you all the warm and fuzzy jam band vibes that you could ever ask for.

The iOnGreenville Live Music Calendar has more than twenty shows around the Upstate Saturday night alone and nearly a hundred when you look at it tonight through Sunday. That sounds like more than enough to choose from if you ask me. Wherever you end up, enjoy the show and have a great Valentine’s Day weekend of music.
