Gay Men’s Chorus concert is a homecoming, says director

The San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus concert at the Peace Center is really a homecoming, said executive director Chris Verdugo.

“Greenville is like a second home to many of us,” he said.

That has everything to do with Greenville’s prominent place in “Gay Chorus Deep South,” an award-winning documentary film about the ensemble’s sometimes-difficult-but-ultimately-triumphant 2017 tour through the South.

“Greenville plays the biggest role in the film,” Verdugo said, speaking by phone from San Francisco. “It’s a pivotal moment in the film. Greenville was so welcoming to us. We love our Greenville family.”

At the Peace Center: Tonight at 7:30

The chorus’ concert takes place 7:30 p.m. on Monday, March 9 at the Peace Center.

The 70-member ensemble will offer a varied pops-style concert featuring musical theater selections (from “Rent,” “West Side Story,” “Avenue Q” and others) and such classics as Patsy Cline’s “She’s Got You,” k.d. lang’s “Constant Craving” and the Monkees’ “I’m a Believer.”

The San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus will be joined by the Greenville Gay Men’s Chorus for two songs.

The San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus arrives in Greenville as local community groups call on Greenville County Council to rescind an anti-gay resolution dating from 1996.

“I think whenever we step into the South, we’re continuing the conversation that’s been ongoing for years,” Verdugo said. “It’s about our community and how they’re represented. We’re excited to continue that conversation.”

“Gay Chorus Deep South” has recently been purchased by MTV Documentary Films.

“There will be a digital and TV release so it can be seen by a much-wider audience, a global audience,” Verdugo said.
