The Community of Foundation of Greenville announced on Wednesday, March 4, the recipients of its 2019 capacity-building grants. The $100,000 will go to help nine local nonprofit organizations’ work in the area.
The money awarded came from the foundation’s unrestricted endowment as well as from donor contributions.
“Our mission is to seek out capacity-building efforts where a modest grant can make a significant impact,” Community Foundation president Bob Morris said in a release. “We are proud to put these funds to good use in our community, and we thank our donors for their support in making these types of gifts possible.”
Over $600,000 has been awarded to local nonprofits through these capacity-building grants since 2014, according to the foundation. The grants seek to improve the capabilities of these organizations in order for them to achieve their missions and to become sustainable.
The 2019 recipients include
Beautiful Places Alliance – $8,500
Funds will be used for technology upgrades at the Paris Mountain State Park Campground. Improvements will allow for a safer, faster check-in for campers, as well as Wi-Fi access to increase visitation and revenue.
Cancer Society of Greenville County – $8,000
Funds will go toward technology upgrades, including the purchase of new computers and operating systems to allow employees to better serve the needs of local cancer patients and their families.
Fostering Great Ideas – $16,500
Funds will go towards a website upgrade, specifically the creation of a digital platform to bring current and potential foster care parents and licensing agencies together for education and engagement under one umbrella.
Greenville Free Medical Clinic – $14,000
Funds will be used for an organizational assessment to evaluate the clinic’s business model and further develop and implement potential revenue stabilization plans that will allow for quality and compassionate health services to continue to be provided to low-income uninsured residents.
Junior Achievement of Upstate SC – $6,000
Funds will be used for security and technology upgrades, including the purchase of new computers that will allow for donations to be made online. Aging office phones will also be replaced to improve productivity.
Mental Health America of Greenville County – $9,000
Funds will be used to expand the capacity of existing crisis management systems in Greenville County through the purchase of up-to-date computers, screens, phones and software licensing to better meet the needs of the more than 20,000 people who reach out for support during mental health emergencies each year.
Roper Mountain Science Center Association – $16,600
Funds will be used to replace outdated iPads that are no longer supported by iOS or the school district. The technology upgrade will allow the organization to continue hands-on STEM programming offered to local students.
Safe Harbor Inc. – $10,700
Funds will be used toward technology upgrades, including new computers and operating systems, that will improve the organization’s everyday service to victims and streamline grant request processes.
Urban League of the Upstate – $10,700
Funds will be used to provide organizational planning and board development support as the organization searches for a new president and CEO and maps out its strategic future as a leading voice for economic equality.
“We are proud to do this on an annual basis because we know capacity building for nonprofits continues to be a high priority,” said Gina Blohm, director of development at the foundation. “It may not be a new program, but it is a way to help a nonprofit work towards achieving their mission and having a big impact on our local community.”
The Community Foundation of Greenville was established in 1956 by donors who wanted to give back to the citizens of Greenville County. The organization and its donors contribute more than $10 million every year to provide necessary financial resources to charitable groups.
