VIDEO: Man who allegedly shouted racial slurs while running at car is charged with hate crime

A man in northern New York was charged on Tuesday with a hate crime after a video showed him running after a car while yelling racial slurs at a couple, police said. Athina Mitchell told police she was driving to a fishing spot with her boyfriend Sunday when she heard a man yelling near the road and stopped to see what he was saying. That man, 35-year-old Derrick Kennedy, is accused of verbally harassing the couple with racial slurs before chasing their car down the road and punching the hood, causing damage. Depositions released by the Town of Plattsburgh Court said Kennedy repeatedly used racial slurs to address the couple, threatened to “rip” one person out of the car and yelled that his family had “100 guns on us ready to go.”Part of the incident recorded in a video and posted by Mitchell on Facebook. It has since garnered hundreds of shares on the platform. “Just until recently we have been hearing of these instances. God knows what’s been happening before that,” she said. “So when I realized that I have the opportunity to make awareness I decided to post it, and you could ask anybody that knows me, I’m not usually like this but I just felt like it needed to be said to make that change happen.”Kennedy has been charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief, a felony being charged as a hate crime. Some local officials have publicly condemned the incident. “The venomous hatred hurled toward Athina Mitchell is reprehensible,” Plattsburgh Town Supervisor Michael Cashman wrote in a release. “Hatred of this kind must be called out. Hatred of this kind cannot be tolerated. Hatred of this kind must be challenged.”
