Upstate South Carolina Sees 869% Increase in Weekly Covid Infections in the Past Month

The Delta variant of the Covid virus has given rise to a dramatic increase in new Covid infections across Upstate South Carolina in the past month. On June 30th, the 7-Day Average New Cases stood at 39; this number stood at 378 on July 30th. This represents an 869% increase in new cases and the trend continues to move upward.

Unfortunately, Covid Vaccination rates in South Carolina continue to lag as only 44.7% of residents 12 and up are completely vaccinated. This number ranks 40th in the nation. on the positive side, the rise in infections does seem to have spurred people to get the vaccines as new data reports that the seven-day average of newly vaccinated Americans is the highest it’s been since July 4, according to Cyrus Shahpar, MD, the White House’s COVID-19 data director. In the past week, vaccination rates have increased by almost 20 percent among Americans ages 12-17, and by more than 25 percent in adults, ABC News reports.
