With a new flag option looming over Mississippians, many are coming up with their own designs. One Mississippian is gaining popularity on social media for their flag designs. Alan Beam is a graphic designer who’s hometown is in Tupelo. He created a new flag design to be considered to replace the old state flag with the Confederate emblem. “I did the stars to represent the history the magnolia, beautiful magnolia blossom to represent hospitality and I know the mockingbird is the state bird but the swallow represents hope,” Beam said. “Mississippi was named after the great river, so I wanted to be sure to incorporate that and use the colors of the existing flag.”The Mississippi State grad rough drafted several options he hopes can be presented to the committee that will select the new state flag design. Beam said he knows there will be tweaks made to his design because of the mandatory “In God We Trust” emblem. The design has been circulating on social media, and Beam said he is humbled to be a part of the conversation. “If I had to tag it with a name just to be easy so people couldn’t identify with it, it would be called the ‘river flag,’” Beam said.Beam now lives in Texas. He told sister station WAPT-TV he has received some negative comments because he is no longer a resident of the Magnolia State. He returned the comment with, “You can take the boy out of Mississippi, but you can’t take Mississippi out of the boy.”Beam said he is grateful so many people have reached out to him with positive comments on his design and would love to be a part of the change.
