Brian Schmetzer believes it should be straightforward for Seattle Sounders to reward their title-winning coach with a new contract as he fired a warning over “slow” talks ahead of facing LA Galaxy.

Schmetzer, who coached the Sounders in the USL and then served as an assistant to Sigi Schmid in MLS, reclaimed the top job in Seattle part way through the 2016 season.

That campaign ended with the Rave Green’s first MLS Cup success and they won the title again last year, having also lost in the final in 2017 – playing Toronto on all three occasions.

But Schmetzer is out of contract at the end of the year and does not appear enthused by negotiations so far.

“It would seem to me pretty obvious you would want to re-sign the best staff in the league,” Schmetzer told The Athletic. “I would think that would be pretty obvious.

“Have there been talks? Yes.
