Panthers add Clay Johnston to practice squad

CHARLOTTE — The Panthers on Tuesday officially added Clay Johnston to their practice squad, bringing it to a full 16 players.

Johnston, who played under head coach Matt Rhule and defensive coordinator Phil Snow at Baylor, recorded 237 career tackles in four years. He was a two-time, second-team All-Big 12 honoree. The Rams drafted him in the seventh round but released him Saturday.

Johnston’s father, Kent, is currently the Panthers’ Director of Player Wellness. A longtime NFL strength and conditioning coach, Kent was the best man in Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre’s wedding. The relationship between the Johnstons and Favre was recently featured on HBO’s “Hard Knocks.”
