Greenville County Schools release next year’s calendar

Greenville County Schools released its 2020-21 student calendar on Wednesday, March 4. Students will begin the next school year on Monday, Aug. 17, 2020 and end the school year on Friday, June 4, 2021.

The calendar complies with existing state law, which does not allow students to start school before the third Monday in August, according to a release announcing the calendar. There will be 180 scheduled days of classes along with three makeup days. As required by the state, 10 professional development/teacher workdays are also included.

The school district’s superintendent decides the calendar after the district’s calendar committee sends recommendations. The committee, made up of parents, teachers, principals and staff, comes up with its recommendations based on input from parent groups and schools. State requirements are also taken into account in the recommendations.

The last day of school before winter break will be Friday, Dec. 18, 2020, and the first day back will be Jan. 4, 2021. Spring break is scheduled for April 5-9, 2021. The district’s professional development/teacher workdays will fall on Oct. 19, 2020; Jan. 15, 2021; and March 19, 2021.

Student holidays for the school year include Labor Day on Sept. 7; fall break on Nov. 2-3; Thanksgiving break on Nov. 25-27; Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 18, 2021; Presidents’ Day on Feb. 15, 2021; and Memorial Day on May 31, 2021.
