Family Night at the Pelzer Auditorium with The Mill Town Players

Melissa Milligan

Mill Town players presented Charlotte’s Web to several sold out crowds in the Upstate ending the run on Sunday, March 8, 2020.

We caught the 7:30 pm show of Charlotte’s Web, Saturday night March 7, 2020. My little entourage included my 3 children and husband. Conveniently and easily located in Pelzer, this is a true gem in our great Upstate. Housed in the historic Pelzer Auditorium the evening took me back to nostalgic theater days in New York. Built in 1920 the theater is celebrating 100 years of upstate shows and events this year.

As we were seated in the balcony I overheard a gentleman in front of me talking to his nephew, who looked to be about 10 years old, about how he once stood on that stage at his age doing a school play of Mary Poppins. This is very much a hometown and community-supported company.

Our show was a nearly sold-out crowd. If there were two empty seats, I couldn’t see them from where I was. Theater fans of all ages were among the crowd.

The building is a historical one, with little modernization which lends to its charm and ambiance. The fold-out wooden seats seem original to the building and seem spacious enough. Soon the show was underway, and we were transported back to our childhood days of this classic story.

The set was beautifully crafted. The familiar barn scene of the beloved story of Charlotte’s Web, made the words of that great book come to life. I had concerns initially that the attention span of my 15-month-old and 6-year-old might be tested that evening, however my concerns were for naught. Each of my children were glued to the performance from the moment the house lights went dark until the intermission.

The performers were each amazing. Kudos to the casting director who so perfectly cast each member from Wilbur, the Zuckermans, and right down to the crowd favorite, Charlotte.

From a fan of Broadway, who has seen several shows in NYC—the talent we have here in the Upstate is among the best I have seen. The Mill Town Players are an award-winning group that seeks to offer wholesome family fun at a value price. Our family of five purchased our tickets for $50 and change, plus $10 in concessions at intermission (most items being just $1 each). The best part is after every show the whole cast gathers outside of the theater for a meet and greet. So, take your camera for special photo memories with the cast after the show! This show could share the accolades that Charlotte had for Wilbur, Some Show, Terrific, Radiant, and Humble! A family pleaser for sure! We will be back!
