Controversy over teaching NC students about systemic racism in America

The North Carolina Board of Education will meet Wednesday to discuss possible changes to the state’s social studies curriculum. These proposed changes would impact what students learn about America’s racist past, and they aren’t without controversy.

The debate boils down to whether these three terms should be added to the curriculum: Systemic racism, systemic discrimination and gender identity.

Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, who sits on the board, says the terms wrongfully paint Americas as a divided nation, saying we’ve “never” lived in a systemically racist country. #WakeUpCLT
