Attempted murder suspect who shot at police arrested in Mexico, authorities say

An Upstate man wanted for attempted murder after he allegedly shot at two Spartanburg police officers was arrested Friday morning in Mexico, according to Robert Marcum with the United States Marshals Service.Jason Goforth was wanted by the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office on general sessions warrants for two counts of attempted murder, two counts of possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and assault and battery high and aggravated, Marcum said.According to Marcum, on June 17, 2019, the Spartanburg Police Department responded to a report of shots fired near the intersection of Ridgedale Drive and Ammons Road. Upon arriving on scene, Goforth allegedly shot at two officers with a rifle on three separate occasions and was subsequently charged with the aforementioned offenses, Marcum said.No officers were injured, according to Maj. Art Littlejohn with the Spartanburg police department.According to Marcum, the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force learned that Goforth fled to Playa Del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico. Goforth was located at an apartment within the city Friday morning, and he was taken into custody by government of Mexico officials, Marcum said. According to Marcum, Goforth was deported from the country and arrested by the United States Marshals Service at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Goforth was booked into a local detention facility in Houston to await further court proceedings, Marcum said.
