Artists Picking Artists: Justin Sardinha from Sesh

Brett Barest

It has only been about three months since the Upstate Music Awards but, given the fact that public gatherings have not been a thing in almost that long, it feels like a hundred years ago. Still, I think about it often for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the sheer number of bands and artists I was introduced to through the event. I knew going in that the Upstate music scene’s talent ran deep but I was pleasantly surprised to know that I was actually underestimating just how much more great local music I needed to get to know.

One of the artists and bands I met that night was Justin Sardinha from the psychedelic garage rock band Sesh. I only knew of Sesh because they were one of the nominees for the Best EP category that night but it was a pleasure to meet Justin in person that evening. I also learned that he was a new employee at The Community Tap, meaning I had the potential to run into him in person six to seven days a week as one of my favorite local businesses doubles as my go-to office and preferred watering hole. Given the circumstances of the new pandemic era, I have actually seen him significantly less than that but, also, enough keep him and his music in the forefront of my mind for a series such as this one. When I ran into him last week and discussed that with him, he was as eager to share his list as I was to read it. It was not a day later before Justin sent me his submission, which goes a little something like this…

The Good Doods

Justin says: “‘Dream Hop’ out of Raleigh. They are an intriguing blend of Hip Hop and Indie Pop Rock that you can’t help but groove to. I’m always a big fan of Hip Hop groups that actually use a real band.”

More About Sesh

That brings us to the inspiration for this week’s list, Sesh itself. Sesh began as Justin alone in his room, writing and recording demos until forming a three piece rock & roll band with a stripped down garage rock vibe with a  touch of psychedelia tossed in for good measure. Generally speaking, my musical tastes are all over the map but if I had to pick a favorite genre or style of music, straightforward and honest garage rock might be in the running for the top spot so, naturally, I was drawn to Sesh’s sound right out of the gates. I strongly recommend their 2020 EP, “I”, which will leave no doubt as to why they were nominated at the UMA’s earlier this year. I look forward to hearing more out of this young band in the future and, hopefully, seeing them live on stage sooner rather than later.

Thanks to Justin Sardinha for the great list of recommended listening. “Artists Picking Artists” takes a break next week as we talk a bit more about John Durham and Local Green’s Record Club and just how we are planning to bring a Record Club of our very own to you. Stay tuned!
