My first interaction with Gene Berger, owner of Horizon Records, was in 1987 and I was in high school. The record store was on South Pleasantburg and Horizon was my go to spot for new releases by REM, U2 and and the like. Forty years later, Gene was one of the first people to believe in iOnGreenville and became one of our initial sponsors. It has been a huge pleasure getting to know him better over the years and have a chance to really see his commitment toward Greenville’s music scene and making our city a better place.

Most people are aware of the incredible selection of music available at Horizon Records but what makes it super special to me are the live performances. Whether inside the Bohemian Cafe or in the record store itself, the amount of talent that has performed at this little corner of Stone Avenue is staggering. While I have been lucky enough to catch a lot of them, two stand out: the first time I took our daughter to see the Avett Brothers perform and the first show I shared with our son; Jason Isbell.

Horizon Records is a treasure and I am happy to hear that the Greenville community has supported it well during the pandemic. Please watch this great video profile by one of our partners, the J Michael Manley Team, as it gives some great insight into what makes Horizon a truly special spot!
