Vandals strike half of churches in Pelzer

Alive Wesleyan, First Baptist and Old Faith Presbyterian in Pelzer all damaged

Three of the six churches in the town of Pelzer were vandalized late last week, according to city officials. Pelzer Mayor Will Ragland says that some deliberately damaged property and shattered windows at Alive Wesleyan Church, First Baptist Church and the Old Presbyterian Church on Leeby Street, as well as smashing in the windshield of a First Baptist Church bus. “We don’t know who did it, but how truly despicable of a thing to do to attack a town’s churches,” said Ragland. “Pelzer is a small close-knit community full of caring neighbors, many of whom have lived here their whole lives and have attended these churches for generations, and so to do something like this, we just can’t understand it.”The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office has launched an investigation into the vandalism, but police reports obtained by WYFF News 4 say that there are no witnesses and there is no video footage of the incident(s). The sheriff’s office does not know if all three incidents are linked. The town of Pelzer has started a reward fund nearing $1,000 for information leading to an arrest. “The church is more than just buildings, and we know that to be true,” said Mayor Ragland. “We also know these buildings hold a special place in the hearts of our citizens, and we aim to protect them. We gonna find you. You’re not welcome here and you’re never going to do this again.”
