Upstate Live Music: Joe Buck Yourself Leads A Great Lineup This Weekend

Brett Barest

There are a lot of quality names on the iOnGreenville music calendar this week but when one of them is Joe Buck Yourself it becomes hard to talk about anything else. I mean, he dominates the conversation on name alone but his talent and influence on the national music scene are what make him one of the most interesting touring artists to come through the Upstate in quite some time (even pre-pandemic, that is). This Friday night he takes the stage at The Radio Room and I suspect it is a show we will not soon forget.

Joe Buck first gained attention as the guitarist of Th’ Legendary Shake Shakers in the late 1990’s although he also recorded bass and drums on their albums over the years. He then went on to play the upright bass for Hank Williams III’s band and also joined Williams’ in his punk/metal side band Assjack. Most notable, though, is his solo work as Joe Buck Yourself which has been wowing listeners and live audiences alike since 2004.

Joe Buck Yourself’s style is a torrid blend of punk and country with a healthy dash of old school blues for good measure. More specifically, his music is dark, angry, and haunting enough to sound like the soundtrack for a slasher flick. Tracks like “Demon in My Head,” “Devil Is on His Way,” and “Dig My Grave” all set the tone for an emotionally dark and gritty catalog of music that showcases Buck’s immense talent as a one man show wielding just an electric guitar and a kick drum can.

Joe Buck Yourself will make his Radio Room Debut this Friday evening with special guest The Bitterman. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door for what guarantees to be one hell of a show.

Other shows about town…

This evening marks the return of live music at The Peace Center Amphitheatre as Brooks Dixon kicks off the city of Greenville’s Sound Check Series. Tonight’s performance is already sold out but know that this series runs every Wednesday through September and will feature a ton of local talent along the way. Pre-purchased tickets are only $10 and are good for a socially distanced “pod” of four people.

Thursday evening offers the chance to see Asheville’s funk/soul Hustle Souls at The Radio Room or Dr. Luv Beatz & Friends at Quest Brewing Company. Dr. Luv Beatz is best known as the drummer for The LOZ Band and Nitegazer but this show marks the debut of his very own solo EP release. Also at Quest, The Marvin King Revue will take the stage on Saturday with a special ticketed performance which will likely sell out, if it has not already.
