Upstate city pursuing event hosting opportunities with NCAA

Spartanburg is looking to grow its reputation as a hub city. This time with the NCAA.”We’ve been in the process of communicating with NCAA for over five years and actively recruiting,” Kristyn Hawkins, Director of Sports Tourism Development for Spartanburg Chamber of Commerce, said. In 2021, Miliken’s campus in Spartanburg County will be busy with runners. “Finally landed the NCAA Division II as well as Division III Cross Country Men’s and Women’s Regional Championship,” Hawkins said. The Spartanburg Convention and Visitors Bureau says it’s submitted bids for 33 future NCAA events to be held in the Spartanburg area. “Division I, Division II, as well as Division III Men’s and Women’s Cross Country National Championships as well as Regional Championships,” Hawkins said. Hawkins says bids are also in to host Women’s Lacrosse and Field Hockey Championships at Limestone College in Gaffney with Spartanburg being the host city.”Greatly benefit our local businesses, our local economy with our restaurants and hotels as well,” Hawkins said. Hawkins says the cross country regional will be the first NCAA event of the kind in Spartanburg since 1995.
