Tips and Tricks for Disposing of Different Garbage

Being environmentally conscious can be a full-time job. South Carolina has a robust recycling community. Check out some tips and tricks for disposing of different garbage so that you’ll be in the know. If you’re traveling, it’s also nice to know the differences by name and not by colors, because color-coding can vary from state to state.

General Bins

Even if your neighborhood doesn’t have a recycling program, you can still save the planet by separating your recyclable items from trash and taking the former to a recycling center. Your general household recycling bin can hold plastics and paper, although there are way more items around your house that you can put in your recycling bin, including aluminum cans and glass bottles.

Plastics

When you’re determining whether you can recycle something made of plastic, look for a recycling logo with a tiny number inside. That will be your guaranteed way to know you’re recycling correctly.

Paper

Not all paper items can be recycled. When you’re trying to determine whether you should recycle or throw paper away, a good general rule to follow is that if it scrunches it up and doesn’t open back up, you can recycle it. The paper must also be clean; in other words, dirty napkins or paper towels aren’t recyclable.

E-Waste

E-waste is garbage that consists of anything technology related. Check out a local technology store for proper disposal. Some machines inside grocery stores accept recycled technology no matter what condition it’s in. Check to see if one is near you if you cannot find an e-waste bin.

Hazardous Waste

Hazardous waste consists of things such as needles, chemicals, and batteries. If you have a health condition such as diabetes, you would need a small container in your home to dispose of your needles after use. For chemical waste removal, follow city guidelines to ensure your own safety. To dispose of batteries correctly, call your local solid waste district if you can’t find a drop-off in your local grocery store.

Metal

An old tip and trick for disposing of different garbage is knowing a junkyard where you can sell your old metal for a small profit. Most of the metal getting recycled there is aluminum cans; others include steel and iron. The people at the junkyard are also great resources to seek further education.

Organic

Organic garbage can include fruit and vegetable pits as well as plant waste and remains from your juicer. This all makes up compost, which you can reuse for the environment. If you don’t have a compost bin, you can store your organic waste in a bag and use it for fertilizer.
