For 15 years, Fatima Quintana, a freshman at Furman University, thought her name was Fatima Claire Taylor. She also thought her guardians, Michael and Charlotte Taylor, were her legal adoptive parents. But all that changed when an officer of the U.S. Attorney’s Office showed up with a summons for Fatima at her Spartanburg home in 2019. She not only learned she wasn’t legally adopted from Nicaragua – she learned she was undocumented. Her story, which includes the work of her pro bono attorney Brittany Arsiniega, a Furman politics and international affairs professor, appeared in USA Today via a story by reporters at The Greenville News (subscription required).
