Snake-throwing Carjacker Identified

A 29-year-old woman remains behind bars today following Friday night’s carjacking and reckless driving through downtown Greenville. The pursuit included the suspect crashing through the barricaded site for the Liberty Bridge Jump-Off, which was being set-up for Saturday’s event. The suspect continued speeding through the city before colliding with a moving vehicle, which disabled the stolen SUV. She was quickly arrested by GPD officers.

As the suspect, Hilmary Moreno-Berrios of 2900 E. North Street in Greenville, was being taken into custody, she complained of an injured shoulder and was taken to an area medical facility for treatment. Moreno-Berrios remained under a doctor’s care for psychiatric testing and evaluation through the weekend.

Remarkably, no other injuries were reported.

This morning, Moreno-Berrios was released from medical care and GPD officers served her with two (2) arrest warrants for: 1) Carjacking; and 2) Malicious Damage to Personal Property. The Malicious Damage warrant stems from the destruction of equipment and other property contained within in the Liberty Bridge Jump-Off event site, which is estimated to be approximately $17,225.

Additionally, Moreno-Berrios was issued five (5) traffic citations for: 1) Hit and Run; 2) Failure to Stop for Blue Lights; 3) Resisting Arrest; 4) Driving on a Closed Street; and 5) Reckless Driving.

Moreno-Berrios was arraigned this morning and remains at the Greenville County Detention Center on a $25,000 bond.

The bizarre incident garnered widespread community attention not only for the chase through the heavily-populated route the suspect traveled, but also because Moreno-Berrios carjacked the Honda CR-V by throwing sticks and what turned out to be a live, non-venomous black snake at the victim.
