Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Where is Skating on the Square?

A: Spartanburg’s open-air ice rink is in the heart of the City, on Morgan Square. View the location on a map by following this link.

Q: How much does it cost to skate?

A: The cost for admission is $10 per person. This price includes the skate rental.

Q: How long can I skate?

A: All day long, if you want to! You can skate, leave, and come back later in the day – all you have to do is get your hand stamped before leaving. Note:  During extremely busy times (mainly Saturday nights) skaters may have to come off of the ice to allow others to get on.  We rotate skaters out every 30 minutes if it is too crowded.  If a skater comes off the ice, they can get in line & get back on again.

Q. Can children skate by themselves?

A. Children 8 and under MUST HAVE SOMEONE AT LEAST 16 YEARS OLD with them on the ice at all times.  And no one is allowed on the ice without wearing skates.  So if an 8 year old child or younger wants to skate, the person with them must also pay to skate.

Q: What if my child (or myself!) can’t skate after paying, can we get a refund?

A: No refunds are issued.

Q: What forms of payment are accepted?

A: We accept cash, debit cards, and all major credit cards. There’s a $10 minimum for cards.

Q: What size skates are available?

A: Skates are available from child size 9 up to adult size 12. Skate sizes will not always match shoe sizes. Our employees will help you figure out what size you need. Socks (not footies) are required to skate.

Q: Do you have both men and women’s skates?

A: All skates are unisex – and they are “hockey” skates, not figure skates.

Q: Can I bring my own skates?

A: Yes, but the admission price is the same.

Q: What if I just want to watch – and not skate?

A: There’s definitely no charge to watch! There’s room to stand all along the rink to watch, but please social distance this year.

Q: How should I dress?

A: Here in Spartanburg, you know we can have some 70+ degree days in November and December. But even if it’s cold, we recomend wearing gloves – because the ice is COLD if you should be “on it” – meaning you took a tumble.  Of course on cold days, you should wear coat, hat, scarves, and gloves.  And remember, YOU MUST WEAR SOCKS.

Q: Is there a place to store my personal belongings?

A: Skating on the Square does not have any storage for personal belongs so please plan for your own needs. Your shoes will be held in exchange for rental skates. If leaving personal items in your vehicle, PLEASE PLACE THEM IN THE TRUNK or out of site of opportunists.

Q: Are there restrooms available?

A: Yes, however you MUST REMOVE YOUR SKATES before going to the restroom.  The restroom trailer is located on Dunbar Street beside the ice rink.

Q: Will the rink close due to rain, snow, warm temperatures or other inclement weather?

A. Safety is our top priority. If conditions become unsafe due to rain or snow, or even unseasonably warm temperatures,  we may need to close the rink. Any such closure will be announced on our Facebook page.

Q: Where should I park when visiting Skating on the Square?

A: There are hundreds of parking spaces available within one block of the ice rink in the Magnolia Street parking garage and the Dunbar Street parking garages. For more parking information, please follow this link.
