SC DHEC Gives South Carolina Covid Update: July 21st

While cases are rising and vaccination rates are stalling across South Carolina, DHEC held a press briefing Wednesday to address where things stand across the state in regards to Covid-19.

Here are the key takeaways:

  • Vaccine misinformation is still a major problem in getting the population vaccinated
  • 542 breakthrough cases have been reported in vaccinated people but their cases have not been as severe
  • As of Friday, there have been 54 confirmed cases from the Delta variant
  • Natural immunity is not as good as the vaccine
  • Previous infection does not mean you should skip the vaccine
  • Vaccinated people may get the virus but the effects will not be as severe
  • 80-90% of hospitalizations are from unvaccinated individuals
  • DHEC urges students to continue to wear mask. New guidance is coming next week
  • DHEC urges everyone to get vaccinated
  • Non-vaccinated people should still wear mask
