Rush Morgan Leads a Busy Weekend of Upstate Music

Brett Barest

I look at the iOnGreenville concert calendar every single week and I cannot help but feel like each week there are a few more shows than the week before. Sure, I still worry that a return to normalcy is still a little ways off for shows at the conventional listening rooms, but we have to find some comfort in outdoor shows at breweries and other “socially distanceable” venues that allow the artists to start earning again and the listeners to get back to listening. Thankfully, these shows are happening with greater frequency with every passing week.

As I look at the calendar for the week ahead, I see a few familiar names and some that are new to me. One of the most recognizable ones is local singer-songwriter Rush Morgan. If you pay any attention to the local music scene at all, you are probably aware of Rush but, more recently, he has been keeping my attention every time he pops up on another “Artists Picking Artists” list here on iOnGreenville. If I am being totally honest, I have always enjoyed Rush’s music but I had no idea how highly he is thought of within the local music scene itself prior to that series. That said, every time he pops up on someone else’s list I find myself listening to his Spotify stream again and getting it more and more every single time. Rush checks all the talent boxes as a vocalist, a musician, and a songwriter and his music seems to get better every time I sit down and listen it.

I tell you all this because you have two chances to see Rush Morgan live this weekend and, really, you should make the most of both of them. Saturday night he will be Downtown at Fireforge where all the tasty brews flow all the time (and I especially have a craving for their new ThaiPA on draft). Sunday morning, he will be at Gather GVL which is a really cool spot with plenty of outdoor space for distanced seating both upstairs and at ground level. Plus, lunch courtesy of The Pasta Addict, Prost, or one of the other Gather GVL food purveyors is always a great way to start off Sunday Funday along with a cold one and live music.

Additionally, there are plenty of other shows popping up at Upstate breweries in the next few days. Thursday you can fill your jam band desires at Quest Brewing with Jerry’s Nub’s Hannah Ramsey and Luke Shriver performing as Weir Here. Friday you can find Charles Hedgepath and Chris Garrett holding down First Friday shenanigans at the new Carolina Bauernhaus at Poe West. Saturday, it is rockabilly fun time with Little Leslie & the Bloodshots out at Jocassee Valley Brewing, and Sunday the steel drum band Steel Empire brings an underappreciated and unique instrument to life back at Fireforge.

Enjoy Live Music Safely

Each of these venues has their own distinct layouts and safety measures in place. We are all far enough into this mess to know the basics, however… wear your mask around people you are trying to stay six feet away from and just be decent humans. Beyond that, enjoy some live music to take the edge off the stress 2020 has brought and support some really talented local artists. As always, wherever you end up, enjoy the show.
