Remains of North Carolina man who vanished 36 years ago identified through DNA match

The remains of a man found along a country road in Alabama nearly 36 years ago have been matched to a North Carolina missing person’s case.Winston-Salem police said the family of Dwight Michael Gordon reported him missing July 24, 1986.Gordon was 37 at the time, and the initial investigation revealed that he was last seen by family two years prior, in June 1984.

Recently, DNA linked Gordon’s identity to remains found by authorities on County Road 459 in Chilton County, Alabama, on Oct. 21, 1984.

The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences determined the man’s death was due to multiple blunt force injuries to the head and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.

Despite multiple efforts by authorities in Alabama, Gordon’s identity remained unknown for decades.
