Here’s the Latest Developments on Paul Murdaugh Shooting Death

The shooting death of Paul Murdaugh and his mother last week in Colleton County South Carolina is attracting national attention but as of Monday, June 14th, details are still coming into focus.

Here’s what is known so far about the Paul Murdaugh Shooting:

  • Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey places the time of death for Paul Murdaugh and his mother between between 9 and 9:30 p.m
  • Both victims were shot multiple times
  • Unconfirmed reports say Paul Murdaugh was killed by a shotgun while his mother was shot with an assualt rifle
  • SLED is “in contact” with the 14th Circuit Solicitor’s Office
  • A 911 call came in around 10 p.m. stating that two people were shot dead at an address on Moselle Road in Islandton on a 174-acre parcel of land owned by the Murdaugh family
  • The bodies were found by Alex Murdaugh, husband of Maggie Murdaugh and father of Paul
  • Both bodies were found outside, near a dog kennel, with multiple gunshot wounds
  • Alex Murdaugh claims to have been out at the time of the shooting
  • The father, Alex Murdaugh, is a senior member of the prominent South Carolina Murdaugh law firm
  • Colleton County Sheriff’s Office said it turned the investigation over to SLED because of a conflict of interest
  • Alex Murdaugh was named by authorities as a “Person of Interest” in the case. More on that here.

SLED is under fire for failure to release details on the Paul Murdaugh Shooting case and issued this statement

It is important for the community to know that SLED is committed to conducting a complete, thorough, and independent investigation to ensure justice is served. We cannot and will not do anything that could jeopardize the integrity of this investigation and thus feel it is inappropriate to comment on specifics while this investigation is ongoing. At the time of his death, Paul Murdaugh was also facing three felony charges in a 2019 Beaufort County boat crash that killed 19-year-old Mallory Beach.

Law enforcement officials and prosecutors were scrutinized over the handling of the 2019 Boating Death Case

  • He was not handcuffed following his direct indictment and never spent a moment in jail.
  • His booking photograph was taken in the courthouse hallway in his own clothing.
  • He was out on a personal recognizance bond of $50,000 at the time of his death.
