North Carolina COVID-19 metrics improving after holiday spikes

The latest North Carolina county alert report shows viral spread grew in more counties, but there are some signs that the COVID-19 metrics are improving.

Dr. Mandy Cohen, secretary of North Carolina’s Department of Health and Human Services, announced the development Thursday. She also updated the state’s response to the virus and its plans to ramp up vaccinations.

Cohen reports that 86 counties are in the critical viral spread/red zone, which is up from 84 two weeks ago. There are 13 counties in the substantial spread/orange zone, which is up from 12.

In the Charlotte region, the only change from the last county alert report was in Burke County, which moved from orange to red. Every county in the Charlotte region is in the red zone, except for Watauga County, which is in the orange zone.

However, Cohen also stated that daily cases and percent positive are starting to flatten statewide.

“We are seeing some progress in our key metrics. They remain much higher than we want to see, but they are stabilizing at the moment,” said Cohen. #WakeUpCLT #COVID19 #Coronavirus
