Lowland Hum, aka Daniel & Lauren Goans make music that plays like some dream-come-true collision of the gentle melodies of the Sundays, the artistic vision of Sigur Ros and the soundscapes of the Cocteau Twins. Their new self-titled album is a dizzying collection of layered vocals, instantly memorable melodies, and empathetic production, creating a huge, full sound with just a few basic elements.
Inspired by 11 months on the road, taking in new and unfamilar sites and sounds in a blur from the front seat of their van, the songs on “Lowland Hum” seem to hang in the air around you like abstract but compelling works of art. There isn’t a wasted note on the album; the musicians instinctively serve the songs with remarkably fluid, intuitive playing.
It’s a low-key but intense record that does what all the best albums do: It creates a world of its own.
