OFFICIALS SAY THEY RECENTLY TRAVELED TO SPAIN. ALL THREE ARE ISOLATED AT HOME. A NEW YORK RESIDENT WHO TESTED POSITIVE FOR COVID-19 IS BEING MONITORED IN MACON COUNTY. OFFICIALS SAY THEY VISITED ASHEVILLE LAST WEEK. OFFICIALS SAY THE PATIENT TRAVELED TO BUNCOMBE COUNTY, WHERE THEY BECAME ILL AND WERE TESTED AND THEN TRAVELED TO MACON COUNTY. THE NORTH CAROLINA STATE LABORATORY OF PUBLIC HEALTH CONDUCTED THE TEST. IT IS PRESUMPTIVELY POSITIVE AND WILL BE CONFIRMED BY CDC. THE PERSON VISITED ASHEVILLE TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY — TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY. RIGHT NOW THERE ARE 33 CASES OF COVID-19 IN NORTH CAROLINA. WALL STREET PLUNGING AGAIN THIS MORNING. THIS AFTER THE FEDERAL RESERVE AGGRESSIVELY CUT INTEREST RATES TO NEAR ZERO IN AN EFFORT TO STOP THE ECONOMY FROM CRASHING. TAKING A LOOK AT THE NUMBERS NOW. THE DOW IS THAT JUST ABOVE 21,000, BUT IT SANK BY 2,200 POINTS AT THE OPENING BELL. THE S&P 500 FALLING BY 7%, TRIGGERING A CIRCUIT BREAKER THAT HALTED ALL TRADING ON THE EXCHANGE FLOOR FOR 15 MINUTES. THE NASDAQ FELL BY AROUND 6%. WHEN TRADING RESUMED, ALL THREE MAJOR AVERAGES EXTENDED THEIR LOSSES. RIGHT NOW, ALL SCHOOLS ACROSS SOUTH CAROLINA ARE CLOSED THROUGH THE END OF THE MONTH. OFFICIALS SAY THEY WANT STUDENTS TO LEARN AND ALSO MAKE SURE THEY CAN PROVIDE THOSE CRITICAL RESOURCES KIDS GET EVERY DAY AT SCHOOL. OFFICIALS WANT STUDENTS TO KEEP LEARNING. UNTIL SCHOOLS REOPEN, GREENVILLE COUNTY WILL HAVE A DRIVE THROUGH SYSTEM FOR MEALS BREAKFAST IS SERVED AT 8:00 AND LUNCH AT 11:00 MULTIPLE UPSTATE SCHOOL DISTRICTS ARE IMPLEMENTING SIMILAR SYSTEMS. SOME OF THEM EVEN INCLUDE MEAL DELIVERY. WE SPOKE WITH SCHOOL EMPLOYEES WHO SAY SOME STUDENTS GO WITHOUT FOOD ON THE WEEKEND, SO MONDAY MEALS ARE CRITICALLY IMPORTANT. THEY SAY THERE WEREN’T MANY PEOPLE WHO TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THE DRIVE THRU PROGRAM TODAY, BUT THEY STILL WANT TO GIVE THEM THE OPTION. A LOT OF KIDS IN OUR COMMUNITY THIS MIGHT BE THE ONLY MEAL THEY GET TODAY. SOME OF THE LESS FORTUNATE AROUND THE DISTRICT. City cancels all meetings through end of March

The city of Charleston announced major steps Monday to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Effective midnight Tuesday, public indoor establishments within the City of Charleston will be temporarily restricted from permitting large gatherings of 50 or more people, including but not limited to bars and restaurants; movie theaters and live performance venues; bowling alleys and arcades; gyms and fitness centers, and houses of worship.Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg announced the following steps being taken:All public meetings have been canceled through the end of the month. Essential meetings will be rescheduled as needed with technology and social distancing practices that protect participants and the general public.Public performances and gallery showings have been canceled in all city facilities through March 31. All instructor led recreation department programs and classes, including youth and adult sports programs, have been suspended.Consistent with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, citizens are discouraged from gathering in groups of 50 or more in city parks and playgrounds.City senior centers are closed.The city’s permit center will be closed to the general public. Many permits can be submitted online through the citizen access portal at https://www.charleston-sc.gov/cap. For permit types not yet configured in CAP, permit applications can be submitted digitally to permits@charleston-sc.gov.At this time, there will be no inspections of occupied structures. Inspections for unoccupied structures will continue as normal.City departments are implementing work-from-home policies that allow city services to continue.City Police, Fire and Sanitation have implemented enhanced safety protocols and prepared continuity of operations plans in case they are forced to maintain operations with a reduced workforce.Copyright 2020 WCSC.
