
Furman’s Mike Bothwell has been named Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, it was announced on Tuesday by the league office.
A junior, Bothwell averaged 18.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals per game to lead the Paladins to a 2-0 start in SoCon play with victories over Chattanooga and Mercer this past week.
Last Wednesday afternoon, the Cleveland Heights, Ohio, product poured in 22 points, including four crucial free throws in the final 30 seconds, and added seven rebounds to propel Furman past previously unbeaten Chattanooga, 77-73, in Chattanooga, Tenn. On Saturday, he contributed 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and a career-high six steals to help the Paladins down Mercer, 83-80, at Timmons Arena.
Thru the first 11 games of the 2020-21 season, Bothwell has paced the Paladins in scoring (17.7 ppg), rebounding (5.5 rpg), assists (3.9 apg) and steals (1.9 spg) per game, while reaching 20 or more points five times. His six steals on Saturday were a part of a 14-steal effort by Furman, which ranked as the most by a Paladin squad versus a Division I opponent since Dec. 5, 2017.
Furman (8-3, 2-0 SoCon) is back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. when it hosts the VMI Keydets (6-5, 1-1 SoCon) in SoCon action at Timmons Arena. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and fans can listen to the “Voice of the Paladins”, Dan Scott, on ESPN Upstate at 97.7 FM/1330 AM in Greenville, 97.1 FM/ 950 AM in Spartanburg, and thru the Radio.com app.
