Fluor Corporation Helps Fund Lila Mae Brock Plaza at Unity Park

Fluor Corporation announced a gift of $10,000 to the City of Greenville to help fund the Lila Mae Brock Plaza in honor of a beloved leader of the Southernside neighborhood who dedicated her life to feeding the hungry and helping the underserved in our community.

The plaza includes a statue of Ms. Brock by Greenville artist Charlie Pate surrounded by a garden and seating. Crews will soon begin construction of the plaza on the corner of West Washington and Hudson streets across from the U.S. Post Office near the entrance to Greenville’s Unity Park.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to help honor Lila Mae Brock’s legacy,” said Annette Allen, senior vice president of global execution for Fluor and general manager of the Greenville office. “She is intrinsically woven into Greenville’s history and truly did her part to help transform the world around her, which is what Fluor strives to do each day.”

Construction is underway on Unity Park, which is scheduled to open in spring 2022.

“The impact of Unity Park as a whole will undoubtedly become an important piece of Greenville’s legacy, and we’re extremely honored to be part of the project,” Allen said.

Born in 1915, Ms. Brock was a revered and beloved figure in the Southernside neighborhood. While she intended to serve as a missionary, she ultimately concluded that the need was just as great on the streets of her own neighborhood.

Ms. Brock retired as a cafeteria operator for Greenville County Schools in the 1970s and dedicated herself to fighting poverty, crime and neglect in Southernside. She served as a role model for the youth growing up in her neighborhood, including her daughter, City Councilmember Lillian Brock Flemming, and before her passing in 1996, could often be found feeding the hungry from her own porch.
