KCCI’S TOMMIE CLARK IS LIVE IN WHERE THEY ARE MAKING SOME CHANGES TOMMIE. ,TOMMI YEAH, THEY ARE MAKING SOME CHANGES. LET ME SHOW YOU HOW BEAUTIFUL THIS IS AS THE SUN COMES UP, JUST OUTSIDE THE CITY LIMITS OF ADEL. I SPOKE WITH THE OWNER OF DEARDORFF SWEET CORN SAYS THIS YEAR’S CROP IS EVEN BETTER THAN LAST YEARS. BUT THEY ARE HAVING TO IMPLEMENT NEW PROCEDURES. OWNER RON DEARDORFF SAYS PICKING STARTED LATE LAST WEEK. WHEN EACH WORKER GOT TO THE FARM, THEY HAD TO HAVE THEIR TEMPERATURE TAKEN FIRST THING. THEY’RE THEN PROVIDED A MASK AND GLOVES BEFORE HEADING OUT TO THE FIELDS. AND RATHER THAN BUSING WORKERS OUT TO THE FARM LIKE USUAL, THEY’VE EACH HAD TO PROVIDE THEIR OWN TRANSPORTATION. DEARDORFF SAYS THEIR TEAM OF ESSENTIAL WORKERS IS KEEPING AS SOCIALLY DISTANT AS POSSIBLE IN ORDER TO PROVIDE A SUMMERTIME FAVORITE TO EAGER IOWANS >> EVERYONE IS SO DEPRESSED WITH THE THINGS THEY’RE HAVING TO DO, AND CAN’T DO, AND THEN TO HAVE A PRODUCT THEY’VE ALWAYS ENJOYED COME ALONG, IT’S LIKE, “HEY, NEED THAT.” [LAUGHTE TOMMIE DON’T WE ALL? The Fourth of July weekend kicked off sweet corn season in many parts of the U.S.The owner of Deardorff Sweet Corn in Iowa said this year’s crop is even better than last years.The company has had to implement new procedures due to the coronavirus pandemic. Owner Ron Deardorff said picking started late last week. When each worker got to the farm, they had to have their temperature taken first thing. They’re then provided a mask and gloves before heading out to the fields and rather than busing workers out to the farm like usual, employees had to provide their own transportation.Deardorff said their team of essential workers is keeping as socially distant as possible in order to provide a summertime favorite to eager customers.“Everyone is so depressed with the things they’re having to do, and can’t do, and then to have a product they’ve always enjoyed come along. It’s like, ‘Hey I need that!’” Deardorff said.
