Distinguished Irish playwright Brian Friel is well-noted for his clever and thoughtful re-imagining of Anton Chekhov’s wonderful plays.
In “The Bear,” Friel adapts Chekhov’s play of the same name with modern sensibilities. A boorish landowner visits with comic and unexpected results. “Friel’s ‘The Bear’ is superbly funny, vivid and keenly alert to Chekhov’s modern sensitivities to gender issues…” –The Daily Telegraph
In “Afterplay,” Friel revisits 2 characters from separate Chekhov plays (Uncle Vanya and Three Sisters). He has them meet in a run-down Moscow café and their lives become intertwined in a charming way. “Friel’s audacious Chekhovian epilogue is short, masterful and hilarious…prior knowledge of Chekhov is neither assumed nor required.” –The Guardian
