October 15th TED Discussion with Dr Tami Blumenfield

Join us as we listen to Dr Tami Blumenfield's TED Talk on the Na people in China. Her research has led a completely alternative way to think of family structures and relationships. As we first watch her video, and then dialogue with her on this topic, it will challenge you to rethink your own family relationships Dr. Tami Blumenfield is an anthropologist, documentary filmmaker, cultural translator and program evaluator based in Greenville, South Carolina. She is a newly appointed Kui Ge Scholar in the School of Ethnology and Sociology at Yunnan University, and is Adjunct Assistant Professor of Ethnology at the University of New Mexico. Her research and media work focus on people living in southwest China and on the dynamics of changing communities. This work has been supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation, two Fulbright fellowships, the American Association of University Women, and the Association for Asian Studies. In June 2019, Blumenfield appeared on NBC's Today Show, where she was interviewed about China's Na people by senior correspondent Kate Snow. Since 2018 Blumenfield has served as President of the Cool Mountain Education Fund, an organization that supports gender-informed education projects in ethnically diverse regions of China, and as principal of Blumenfield Cultural Services. She holds a PhD in Sociocultural Anthropology from the University of Washington.
