Nature Discovery Program

The Nature Discovery Program will engage 5-14 year old children in nature related inquiry and activities. The program will run from 4:00-5:30pm. October 8th will be the pilot for the Nature Discovery Program. We hope that we will get enough interest to turn this program into a series. This is a drop off ONLY program. Parents are welcome to walk around the preserve or run errands while their child participates. The teaching groups will consist of no more than 10 students and the instructor. Nature Discovery Program Description for October 8th Lake Conestee Nature Preserve is a birding hotspot. We have recorded 221 species at the preserve which is more than any other natural area in Greenville. This is the best spot for birders of all experience levels to visit and explore. Class Description for 5-9 Year Old Group It’s fall migration time! That means there are lots of different species of birds visiting the preserve as they travel south for the winter. We will model the journey of a bird migration with a fun game. Then, we will learn how to use binoculars and identify birds based on key characteristics. Students will go home with a nature journaling activity to do that will teach them how to sketch one ofof the birds we saw during our hike. Class Description for 10-14 Year Old Group It’s fall migration time! That means there are lots of different species of birds visiting the preserve as they travel south for the winter. We will learn how to use binoculars and identify birds based on key characteristics. We’ll have a brief bird observation and drawing lesson, and kids will be encouraged to sketch one of the birds we saw when they get home. We’ll take a birdwatching walk to one of our most beautiful observation decks and children can choose between two options: if they have a smartphone, they will be trained in using a birding app to identify and keep track of birds they see, or they can play Bird Bingo. We’ll also have an iPad we’ll show the group so all can learn every tool. Cost One child can participate for $10. Additional children from the immediate family can participate for $8/each. Please pay attention to this as well as the age of the child when purchasing a ticket. Health and Safety In following with recommendations from the CDC and SCDHEC we will require face masks when physical distancing is not possible. Any equipment that the children use will be assigned to them for the duration of the program. If necessary, equipment will be sanitized between uses if it is being shared. The temperature of each child will be taken upon arrival. Parents/guardians will have to fill out and sign a health pre-screening form.
