Homeschool Day at LCNP

Our 1st Homeschool Day in September was a great success! We have decided to offer another day this fall. We will offer three classes; two for elementary ages and one for middle/high school students. One of the classes is a repeat from the program in September; the other two classes are new offerings! The classes will go from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm. You are welcome to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy in the park following the class. Buffers and Beavers – Ages 5 to 11 Students explore the plants of the riparian buffer zone, focusing on plant adaptations as well as the important function this green ribbon serves to protect our streams. Students will also discover one of the park’s notable inhabitants, the North American Beaver, and learn how they adapted to life in a wetland and how they have helped engineer our park. Conestee Kitchen - Ages 5 to 11 It’s eat or be eaten out here! – Students explore the different natural environments in the park – putting together food chains and discovering decomposers. They will experience the “Meadow Munchies”, a “Forest Feast” and a “Lakeside Lunch”. At the meadow, students will put themselves in a meadow food chain; at the seeps they will discover which beak adaptation is best for our wading birds; and in the forest, they will discover the decomposers and the role they play in the food chain. Forest and Fungus - Ages 12 and up Students work together in groups using tools, field guides, and dichotomous keys to determine species and size of trees in our forest. Students also go on a forest walk to identify common trees, fungi, and plants of the mature oak/hickory forest. We will spend some time at the end to further investigate fungus and their role in the forest. When: November 10th, 9:00 am - 12:00pm Where: 840 Mauldin Rd., Greenville, SC. This is the entrance located by the large picnic shelter and playground. We will be waiting to check everyone in at the large picnic shelter. Cost: $8 per student (ages 5 and up), $4 for adults. Registration: Pre-registration is required and closes on November 9th at 11:55 pm. The different classes will be offered as separate tickets. Please choose how many of each ticket you need before proceeding to payment. You may choose to send a younger child to the older class or vice versa to keep sibling groups together, etc. We are fine with that as long as you understand that the classes will be geared towards the age groups listed. Classes will be limited to 25 people per class.
