COVID-19 UPDATE –
Effective 4/6/2020, all GUUF buildings and property will be closed until further notice.
Suggested Donation: $20 adults, $10 children
Greenville has a rare opportunity to hear all of Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas live in 13 concerts during 2020, the 250th anniversary of his birth, performed by Zachary Hughes, who is a 2015 Juilliard graduate and a brilliant but little-known concert pianist. The series began January 12, and the second concert was Sunday, February 9, at 3:00pm on the 9 ½ foot long Bösendorfer Imperial concert grand piano at the Greenville Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 1135 State Park Road in Greenville.
During his preparation for the inaugural concert in June 2019, Zack suggested the idea of playing all 32 Beethoven sonatas in 13 concerts during 2020 on the Bösendorfer, and the Fellowship gladly agreed.
To make these performances accessible to all, Zack did not want to charge admission. Instead, we suggest donations of $20 for adults and $10 for students, but we encourage guests to give more or less as they are able. Zack is practicing full-time this year, so this is his only livelihood.
We hope you will consider coming to these amazing concerts. Zack is doing them as “chautauqua-style” events, where he talks about Beethoven’s life and explains how it is reflected in the sonatas he is playing that day.
The other concerts on the schedule are: Feb. 23, March 22, April 19, May 3, Sept. 13, Sept. 20, Oct. 4, Oct. 25, Nov. 15, Nov. 29, and Dec. 6. All will occur at the same time, same place – 3 pm Sunday afternoons, Greenville Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 1135 State Park Road. Please forward this to all your friends and anyone else who might be interested. Child care is provided, by the way – just call or email the Unitarians (864-271-4883, email@example.com) to reserve your place.
There’s more info on Zack’s sonata concert series website: https://www.thebeethovenodyssey.com/. Paul Hyde just wrote an engaging article on Zack’s Beethoven Odyssey series in the Greenville Journal: https://greenvillejournal.com/arts-culture/pauls-pick-greenville-pianist-takes-on-all-32-beethoven-piano-sonatas-in-2020/
By the way, Edvard Tchivzhel heard Zack play and has invited him to play the Beethoven Concerto No. 4 with the Greenville Symphony Orchestra October 16-18, 2020, in the Gunter Theater at the Peace Center. So we can look forward to that as well!
