Picture your typical bar: liquor flowing, lights turned low, a closely-packed crowd, with strangers approaching strangers seemingly without any qualms. The appeal of bars is the very thing that makes them such risky spots for COVID-19 transmission.
So it’s no surprise that in the ongoing conversations about reopening dining, bars are facing even more complicated challenges — and so few have been able to reopen at all, with the exception of to-go drinks and compulsory reinforcements (aka that bag of chips you were forced to buy along with your Negroni).
What does it mean for bars in the long run? On Monday, August 24, at 1 p.m. ET, Beth McKibben of Eater Atlanta, Eve Batey of Eater San Francisco, and Ashok Selvam of Eater Chicago will discuss the issues facing bar owners and employees, how that varies between the regions they cover, whether or not bars are inherently unsafe, and what it all means for bar culture as we know it.
