Congressman Madison Cawthorn: I don’t feel I had any responsibility for them attacking the Capitol

U.S. Congressman Madison Cawthorn (R-District 11) is just days into his new role. But, the 25-year-old, who is the youngest serving congressman in modern history, has found himself embroiled in controversy for participating in the pro-Trump rally that preceded the chaos at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday.

Cawthorn, of Hendersonville, used Twitter to encourage supporters to attend the rally. Cawthorn spoke at the event and congratulated the gatherers as he came onstage.

“This crowd has some fight in it,” Cawthorn said. “And I am so thankful for each and every one of you.”

Hours later, at the urging of President Donald Trump, supporters moved to the Capitol, and many bullied their way inside.

But, despite his tweets urging “millions of patriotic Americans stand for their country,” Cawthorn said he felt no culpability in what unfolded Wednesday afternoon.

“I don’t feel I had any responsibility for them attacking the Capitol,” Cawthorn said. “It was despicable. They are thugs.”
