Biology major Libby Dixon, a senior at Furman University, spent last summer studying collapsing stream banks and working with Friends of the Reedy River, a conservation organization in Greenville, South Carolina. Using geographic information systems (GIS) technology, she pinpointed locations of failing banks to help the organization better target restoration efforts. She’ll present her findings at Furman Engaged, a forum for spotlighting student research. Her research has been highlighted in the Greenville Journal and Tallahassee magazine.

“Stream bank failures are a major threat to urban areas, larger bodies of water such as lakes and reservoirs, and the environment around them,” Dixon wrote in her summary. “Streams are important aspects of ecosystems all around the world and they must be protected to ensure a properly functioning system.”
