Clemson coach Dabo Swinney No reason to change team’s COVID 19 safety

Clemson football won’t change its COVID safety procedures. That’s because the Tigers don’t believe they did anything wrong last week in what ended up with a game at Florida State being canceled three hours before kickoff. Clemson said it followed ACC protocol, and the league agreed, but the Seminoles would not play because a player who tested positive was on the travel party. An offensive lineman for Clemson was held out of practice two days last week because he had “mild symptoms,” Swinney said, but participated the rest of the week while also being tested daily beginning Wednesday. It wasn’t until the results of a Friday test, after the Tigers had already arrived in Tallahassee, Florida, that there was a positive result. The player was immediately quarantined and sent back to Clemson, the coach said. When it was suggested Sunday night during Swinney’s weekly conference call with reporters that perhaps the player should not have traveled with the team, he took offense to the idea that Clemson might not be operating as carefully as possible.“So now we’re changing the rules?” Swinney said. “You either trust the test or you don’t. So now if the test is negative, we’re going to tell guys they can’t play anyway? That’s why we test. If a guy has an earache or a runny nose and he tests negative all week, we’re going to say, ‘Well, we don’t take you?’“Just mild symptoms. It was a backup offensive lineman. He didn’t practice Monday. He didn’t practice Tuesday. He practiced Wednesday and tested on Wednesday, practiced Thursday and tested again on Thursday making sure. He was negative all week.”Swinney said there have been players on his team and also opposing teams to learn of positive test results at the end of travel days.“That’s why we expanded the rosters,” he said. “It’s not like we didn’t anticipate this. We went from 72 (players) to 80.”Clemson has one more scheduled regular-season road trip next week to Virginia Tech. The Tigers plan to do exactly what they did in preparation for Florida State, the coach said. That includes using nine buses for ground travel, setting up tents in the hotel parking lot for meetings and allowing players who have tested negative to travel even if they have mild symptoms.“I don’t know what else we can do unless the (ACC) medical advisory group wants to change all the rules,” Swinney said. “It’s the same rules we’ve been on all year, but they seemed to change Friday in Tallahassee.”Clemson plays Pitt at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the final home game of the season. Pitt played last week against Virginia Tech despite 16 players being out because of COVID quarantine protocol.“On to the next one,” Swinney said. “We’ll keep moving forward. That’s the way this year’s been anyway. This team has risen to every occasion, and I don’t have any doubt they’ll continue to do that.”
