January 2019 Events & Activities
All Museum events and activities are free with admission.
Weekend activities take place at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays, unless otherwise noted.
January 5 – Bubble Hour – We love bubbles at TCMU-G! Join us for sudsy-fun as we put on gloves to bounce bubbles, make bubble art, and explore the dazzling world of dry-ice bubbles. This program is ideal for any age.
11 am – 12pm and 2 pm – 3 pm – Creation Station
January 12 – STEM and Story – STEM and Story is our monthly science-initiative for all ages. Read a book together and participate in follow-up science activities afterwards. Today, we will read our favorite snowy stories and engage in snowy science.
11 am and 2 pm – Be Anything Place
January 19 – Play in Clay – Calling all artists! This program allows children to make and create with clay. Explore various clay techniques and make your own snowflake to take home.
11 am and 2 pm – Creation Station
January 26 – Tot Time – Each quarter, TCMU-G offers Tot Time! Children five and under can join us for a morning of music, playtime, and stories.
9 am – 1 pm – Be Anything Place

January 12 – Sensory Friendly Morning: Sensory Friendly Days take place once a month. This month, our Sensory Friendly Morning takes place on January 12 from 9 am – 10:30 am. Explore the museum at your own pace, participate in sensory-friendly activities, and have access to quiet rooms.

January – Fun with Food: Have fun with food and explore food-based inventions this month using the invention process. Explore fun foodie inventions, and create something fit for a chef or baker!
January 8, 15, 22, 29: Children five and under can join us for Terrific Tuesday every week during the school year! From 9 am – 11 am, children can join us for open-ended art. Get your bodies and minds working in music and movement at 11:45 am. Participate in Story Time and More at 10 am, 11 am and 1 pm.
Spanish Story Time
January 6 and 20 – Hola! Join us on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month for a special Español Story Time! This new program is facilitated by Spanish-speaking educators. Children will learn new vocabulary while reading familiar books. This month, children will read “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” Children will learn familiar colors and animals in Spanish. This program is appropriate for children of any native language. Hasta pronto – See you soon!
January 12th 9:00-10:30: Sensory Friendly Morning- We welcome our special needs friends for dimmed lights, lowered sounds, quiet spaces with “calm-down kits” and adapted programming.
January 17th 5:30-6:30: Volunteer Info Session– Join us to learn about the volunteer program at TCMU-Spartanburg!
January 21st 1:00– Join us for a very special Story Time and More with students from Wofford College coming to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Moon Landing with a story, a craft and a special treat! This program will be for children 4 years old and up, sign-up at admissions is required.
January 21st 9:00-12:00 MLK Jr. Day Camp- Have a mom or dad’s morning out while your 3-6 year olds have a morning to learn about dinosaurs and play at the museum!

Demonstrations to take place in the Book Nook Tuesday – Sunday at 11:45 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. January 2 – 13: Arctic Animal Insulation- Join us this week to see how animals that live in arctic regions are able to keep warm in the cold!
January 15 – 27: Snowstorm in a Jar- Join us for this week’s Random Act of Science to see how to make your very own snowstorm in a jar!
January 29 – February 10: Exploding Snowmen: Check out this week’s Random Act of Science to make a chemical reaction that will make a snowman explode!
Open Art Studios
Open-ended art experiences to take place in the Spark!Lab Jr. Classroom Tuesday – Saturday from 2:00-4:00

January 8 – 9: Sledding Ramps- Predict and test which mini ramps and sleds will work best.
January 15 – 19: Penguin Rafts- Can you make a raft to keep the penguin from sinking into the icy water?
January 22 – 26: Snow Scoops- Construct and test how the best way to scoop snow.
Story Time and More
Enjoy story time and a take home craft or activity from Tuesday – Friday at 11:00 & 1:00, Saturdays at 1:00. Themes change weekly, check the calendar for this week’s story!

Join us for Story Time and More this week to learn all about penguins while we read Penguins, Penguins, Everywhere! by Bob Barner. After the story, we’ll make our very own penguin crafts to take home!
January 8 – 12
Check out Story Time and More this week to read the Eric Carle favorite- Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? Your little one will be reading the words right along with us before the end of the story! After the story, stick around to make a cool polar bear craft.
January 15 – 19
Check out Story Time and More this week to read about a narwhal that feels left out until he realizes he can do something that the other sea creatures can’t in Wendell the Narwhal, by Emily Dove. After the story we’ll make narwhals using our hands!
January 22 – 26
Check out Story Time and More this week to learn about hibernation while we read the funny rhyming book- Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson. Afterward, we’ll make our own hibernating bears to take home!
January 29 – February 2
Join us this week as we wrap up our month of wintery adventures by reading the classic story- The Snowy Day, by Ezra Jack Keats. We’ll talk about our favorite snowy day activities and make snow paintings to take home!

Tuesdays – Saturdays 9:30 am. (Mondays-Saturdays during the summer)
Join us to get your bodies moving and work on fine and gross motor skills with song and dance. Selections vary daily.
