Charleston’s ‘Border Cuisine’ Spot Juan Luis to Expand into the Workshop Space

A permanent home for gorditas and breakfast tacos

The Texas-meets-Mexican menu from Juan Luis started as a pop-up with the Lewis Barbecue crew; then it moved on to a stall at food hall Workshop; then it becaame a food truck parked on the Lewis Barbecue lot; and now it will take over the entire Workshop space when the fancy cafeteria closes in the spring. Just announced, pitmaster John Lewis will create a permanent home for Juan Luis at 1503 King Street.

Lewis, originally from El Paso, Texas, says that this “border cuisine” (he prefers this term over “Tex-Mex”) of breakfast tacos, enchiladas, and gorditas is what he grew up eating, so he is excited to make it a more permanent fixture in Charleston.
