A small plane has crashed in Shenandoah National Park

A small plane with a lone pilot crashed in Shenandoah National Park Wednesday afternoon, park officials said. The park posted about the crash on its Facebook page just after 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. “We are currently investigating the scene of a small plane crash in Shenandoah National Park. We will release more details as we know them,” the post said. 

The plane, a Piper PA-20 plane, crashed in the Luray area of the park. In the immediate hours after the crash, the National Transportation Safety Board said they were not traveling to the scene. There was no information available about passengers on the plane and no word on injuries. 

A commenter on the park’s Facebook page said they came out of the woods after a 5-hour hike and saw “17 emergency vehicles… [We were] asked if we saw anything concerning ‘the plane incident.’”
