5 killed in wrong-way crash on South Carolina highway

Five people were killed after being trapped in the wreckage of a horrific wrong-way collision early Sunday morning in South Carolina, authorities said. The crash happened when a 2014 Kia traveling north in the southbound lane of Interstate 385 in Laurens County hit a 2020 Hyundai head on just after 2 a.m., according to South Carolina Highway Patrol. All three people in the Hyundai and both people in the Kia died. Four of them died at the scene while the fifth victim was pronounced dead at a hospital, the agency told news outlets Sunday. Only one of the five was wearing a seat belt, South Carolina Trooper Joe Hovis said. All of them had to be extricated after being trapped in the wreckage. The victims were identified as state residents Desmond Tareeq Ervin, 28, Brandon Lamar Westfield, 30, Abdul Jafar Aaron, 28, and Ahmad Rashad Williams, 33, as well as North Carolina resident Carlos Jamarl Braddy, 38, according to local news station WYFF. It was not immediately clear which one of them was the wrong-way driver. The crash remains under investigation. Recommended on Daily News
