40 lbs of Chicken for 40 Dollars: What You Need to Know

Many of you have seen the news about the crazy chicken sale traffic from this past weekend, so what was this all about? The signs boasted of 40 lbs of chicken for 40 dollars. Facebook was first to alert me to the sale. It hooked me in and I had to see what this sale was all about. We hemmed and hawed about actually going for several hours. After seeing the traffic on the news, I was for sure not wanting to go. Finally about 2 pm, we decided to jump in that crazy line at the Farmers Market.

We entered the line on Pleasantburg Road about a mile from the light to turn on to Rutherford Road. Several officers were helping with traffic starting at Pleasantburg Road to the Farmers Market. This made the traffic flow a little more smoothly. After waiting in line for about 35-45 minutes (total), we left with 2—40 lb boxes of chicken breasts.

By the time we reached the three-lane barn entrance to receive the chicken they only had breasts and thighs left. We had originally wanted the strips. Each box is 40 lbs as advertised. We did not get out of our vehicle at all. Staff with masks and gloves retrieved our order and placed them in our vehicle. Within each box is freshly cut and processed chicken. Each box contains 4–10 lb plastic bags of breasts. This chicken is fresh, not old and not frozen. The whole chicken breast laid out takes up the size of a large dinner plate.

$45 – 40 lb Case of Jumbo Boneless Breasts
$35 – 40 lb Case of Jumbo Boneless Thighs
$60 – 40 lb Case of FROZEN Jumbo Cut Wings

I got one box home after giving a box away to my in-laws and dropping some off to friends (we were careful to make sure they were social distancing appropriate drop-offs)—I separated the breasts into gallon size Ziploc bags for easier thawing and cooking later. And yes, after securing 80 lbs of chicken and giving some away and separating the rest of the chicken— I broke down and ordered food for dinner instead of cooking. It had been a long day and I know we’ve all been there. Rest assured though the grill will be firing up, the crockpot chicken recipes will be dusted off, and I will be investing in a nice frying pan! Does anyone have a good chicken pot pie recipe?

So, what do you need to know about this sale?

  1. Come early and be prepared to wait. Be nice while waiting in line, like we expect our children to be in line at school. Stay in your spot, no cutting–and hands to yourself (we are still staying safe with social distancing.)
  2. The sales are CASH only, be sure you have CASH on hand.
  3. This is a “no limit sale”—you can buy for those who can’t get out and purchase for themselves—but realize this is a lot of chicken so plan how you will use it all or give this to those who will use it. Mind your mama when she told you “Don’t be wasteful.”
  4. There are several sale spots in the area in addition to the State Farmers Market on Saturdays. Check out their schedule on Facebook or at this link. Many of these sale sites are church properties with a portion of the sale going back to the ministry. Who doesn’t like to do good when they can?
  5. Buy gallon Ziploc bags to get your chicken separated for freezing when you get home!
  6. Prices are listed on the website. I have seen it now priced at $45 instead of the $40 and some other price differences for other selections like strips, thighs, drumsticks, wings—etc so check out the page for pricing and be prepared to have an alternative plan if what you originally going for is out.
