Eyas Tran couldn’t wait to open the present he got from the Hampton Police Department: rescue vehicles, his favorite things.

“He’s a firefighter one day, a policeman the next day,” said his mother, Minh Tran.

The toys were part of the honor bestowed on the 3-year-old, along with a certificate and pin, in a ceremony usually reserved for officers.

“This is to certify that Eyas Tran has been awarded the Hampton Police Department lifesaving award for his actions on May 6, 2020, as per the following,” said Chief Rich Sawyer.

Eyas was on a walk with his family that day when he saw a newspaper in his neighbor’s driveway.

“Like he usually does, he brings the newspaper up to the doorstep,” said his mother, adding that he then noticed three other newspapers on her steps.

Eyas rang his neighbor’s doorbell, but she didn’t answer.

His mother called the police, who found that neighbor Peggy Pilat-Roth had accidentally locked herself in a small, windowless room in her basement.

“I knew once it clicked and I was there, I said, ‘I’ve got to wait,'” Pilat-Roth said.

And she did.

“About four days, from 11:30 Sunday to after 3 Wednesday when they found me,” she said.

She said she never panicked because she was certain that someone would notice her absence.

“It’s either going to be Eyas, because he spots the newspapers, or my friend in Nashua, because I’m not returning phone calls and texts,” Pilat-Roth said.

“The intelligent quick-thinking and unusual actions by Eyas Tran on this occasion resulted in saving the neighbor’s life,” Sawyer said.
