The Spinning Jenny Is Bringing the Heat in July

Brett Barest

The pandemic affected a lot of venues a lot of different ways but one of the places I most missed writing about over the last year or so is The Spinning Jenny. In my humble opinion, it is arguably the best pure listening room the Upstate has to offer and the first place I point to when people whine about how “we don’t have an Orange Peel” or some similar complaint. It is a big enough room to bring in nationally touring acts and has all the amenities an ever growing Downtown Greer has to offer to provide a full night-on-the-town experience. After being pretty quiet and cautious throughout the pandemic, The Spinning Jenny’s calendar comes back to life in full force starting in July and to say I am impressed would be quite an understatement.

The month kicks off with a healthy dose of American roots music courtesy of The Arcadian Wild, Molly Tuttle, and Dirty Grass Soul on July 9,10, and 23, respectively. Each of these artists puts their own spin on classic bluegrass and Americana and has earned well deserved acclaim in the process. The Arcadian Wild’s last album debuted at #9 on the Billboard bluegrass charts, Molly Tuttle is a two time International Bluegrass Music Association Guitar Player of the Year, and Shelby, NC’s Dirty Grass Soul has gone from playing venues in the Carolinas to shows across the United States as they continually grow their following. For me personally, I first saw Molly Tuttle a few years back at an intimate in-store performance at Horizon Records and I have been waiting for the opportunity to see her again ever since, so I am particularly excited for this show as she is an amazing talent to see live.

July 24 sees local modern pop singer/songwriter Nathan Angelo take the stage just a little over a year after he won the award for Best Solo Artist at the inaugural Upstate Music Awards last year. The following week sees the return of multi-instrumentalist Zack Deputy. His Latin infused blend of hip-hop, pop, and funk makes for a captivating sound and a show that you will not want to miss.

For me, the highlight of all of this action actually happens in August, but it is August 1 so it is close enough for me to talk about here. Ladies and gentlemen, I am as giddy as a schoolboy to be able to say that THE REVEREND HORTON HEAT will be at The Spinning Jenny just about a month from now I could not be happier about it. The esteemed Reverend’s brand of hard charging rockabilly is exactly the sort of music that I never tire of and, if I am being perfectly honest, he is the one nationally touring artist that I have seen more than any other over the last 20 years. From Indianapolis to Greenville and quite a few points in between, if I miss an opportunity to see The Reverend Horton Heat a wellness check is probably in order.

I tell you all this now, weeks to a month in advance, because tickets are on sale for all of these shows and they all merit plenty of attention and proper planning. It is going to be an amazing month of music in Downtown Greer at The Spinning Jenny and you should start claiming your tickets now before it is too late. In the meantime, I look forward to seeing you at one of these shows or any of the seemingly countless others on the iOnGreenville music calendar.
